I am not an electronics guy and I am not good at English words(find it difficult to remember exact words ) so it might be a bit hard to put together in words what I want to ask so guys I beg your understanding towards me.

I have a question about the electronic head used in reading linear scales.

There are linear scales that are made out of metal strips and have very fine reflective & non reflective etchings on it (image). The reading head is made out of a photo sensor or something that reads the reflective and non reflective surface of the etched metal part of the strip.
So my questions are (its ok if any one person is not able to help with all questions :))
1] What is the sensor called that reads the reflective surface?
2] What is the working principle of the head ? I mean how does the components work together to get a reading on the display
3] There are scales with 1 micron reading ability, so what kind of sensors are used at that precise reading level?8-O
