How to interface PIC mcu with a VGA display?

    Hi guys,
I'm just planning to do a controller board with a PIC mcu on it that can drive a VGA display. I plan to just display text and simple graph or chart. I've found some info on the internet:

    http://www.lucidscience.com/pro-vga%...nerator-1.aspx
    http://www.pyroelectro.com/projects/...box/index.html

But I just want an assurance from you guys, can a 8-bit PIC mcu able to drive the VGA display?
Is it true we can drive the VGA display by just using 5 signals (RED, GREEN, BLUE, H-SYNC, V-SYNC)?

Here is an RGB solution http://tinyvga.com/avr-sdram-vga

But not a very useful or practical one.

Re: How to interface PIC mcu with a VGA display?

see this module..it uses a television monitor (RCA plug; the yellow coloured RCA plug) instead of a VGA port.

I have used this in my project for a real-time data logger, that had to show real time data on a TV. It works very well and is very easy to configure using a PIC.

    Link is posted below.

This is pretty old technology and low level interface from RAM to VGA for RGB . http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20...Fs/FMS3818.pdf good luck finding parts. You better reconsider what you really want to learn or do.

Re: How to interface PIC mcu with a VGA display?

old technology maybe..but then its more popular as other technologies like HDMI, DVI etc, are more processor intensive and cannot be handled by a PIC.

you could always convert the video out signal to VGA using a converter.

Re: How to interface PIC mcu with a VGA display?

This might have been interesting 40 yrs ago, but to generate pixel mapped memory to a VGA monitor is not cost effective. Consider other solutions.
    e.g. Raspberry Pi.
