What Voltage is a lorry battery?

24V for mosts, what I know, two big over 100Ah of 12V in serie. Maybe some have additional bat for inverters and other equipments.

Most lorry batteries, as far as I know, are 12V. A few are connected together, series or parallel (usually series).

Lol - most (probably all) lorries around here have a 24V electrical system, but from what I've seen that's generally from two 12V series-connected batteries, which can legitimately be called a 24V battery.

So both answers are correct.

OK thanks, so do we say that in fact, a lorry "bus" voltage, due to the series connected car batterys is thus 27V?.......because a car battery is not really 12V, but is in fact 13.5V

(I dont know why people say car batterys are "12V", because they never have been.(?))

Yep, Trucks have high current demand, and voltage is increased to 24V system (2x12V - two batteries in serie) to lower current at high level of power - the same situation like in inverter systems, why 12V system is used up to 800-1000W, just see what current you will have.

In most normal cars are 12V systems inside. I was kid when Moris UK put 6V batteries in cars and use plus over car body (not ground like today).

Hi grizedale, a lead acid battery has 13.5 volts when is fully charged and the charger is disconnected and 11 volts (normally) when the more discharging is stopped (as advised by the manufacturers for safe operation. Do not apply to special ones). So for convenient it is referred as 12 volts. Like a DIGITAL one kilo (1K) does not equal to one thousand (1000) but 1024 and called 1K. Same general rule applies here.

12V Lead Acid Battery 6 cells have (for new battery) :

- Nominal Voltage 12V.
- 24h after charging OCV should be 12,72-12,73V (each cell is full at 2,12V, and discharged at 1,99V).
- Float Charge Voltage 13,5V-13,7V-13,8V (depends from temperature, for higher temp voltage is lower in desert at 50C should be around 13,2V). Battery can stay long time on charger at float charging voltage.
- In car/truck charging system, when engine is on and alternator charging battery, voltage on battery terminals should be 13,8V, and on alternator terminals 14,4V.
- In cars/trucks is used starter lead acid also called "float battery". There is deep cycle type of lead acid batteries with different specifications.

In cars/trucks vehicle battery have additional rule to make voltage regulation in vehicle electrical system, without battery voltage will have big variations in system with high voltage peaks.
