What is meant by "parallel path" in transformer winding terms?

for wave winding it is always 2 and for lap it is equal to the number of poles it is mentioned. I believe there is a very simple logic to it, but with the 2-dimensional diagrams,i'm unable to get the picture in mind.. Also the term " parallel path" is unclear..

Can u help me out with the terms,or link me a picture?
