why large value gate resistor is needed in common gate fet amplifier?

why large value gate resistor is needed in common gate fet amplifier? shouldnt gate be just tied to ground? I see a large value resistor in Mohmsrom gate to ground and a parallel capacitor from gate to ground. Thanks.
 

Same reason an emitter follower is biased above ground? So that you get the full waveform out and now just the positive half?
