I need ideas / schematics for PLC like industrial opto-isolated digital inputs... I want to detect passive switches and 12V/24V proximity sensor outputs using only one pair of terminal block input... I mean, I want to be able to use passive and active type inputs without doing modification on board...
Is it possible? How do they do that in commercial PLCs?

well you didn't mention how many inputs or outputs ..But check www.Olimex.com .I have used their very inexpensive AVR-IO
4 inputs 4 outputs ..

I want to make optoisolator input block for my own microcontroller. I plan to make 4 or 8 digital channels supports both passive and active inputs at the same time...
