It is rather annoying having to log using pen & paper distances and locations for trips made in a company vehicle.

Require ideals for a portable electronic gadget that can quickly log start and end odometer reading and allow manual entry of stop and start location. Perhaps something like the i-gotu gadget or an iPhone app.
 

I can sugest you to use a mobile phone with GPS module featured inside.
A Java application, can send to a central operation unit a call, informing begin/end of route.
