how to detect the sound direction hardwired

Re: sound detection

use a microphone and detect power changes

Re: sound detection

It is not clear what you need.

If you need to determine the arrival direction of the sound you need to apply beamforming techniques to an array of microphones.

Shortly beamforming takes the outputs of the microphones in the array and combine them in a way to cancel out the delays by wich the sound arrives to the different microphones.

Search the site for "beamforming"

Re: sound detection

hi,
i think that a simple solution could be the use of a microphone with a cardioid pattern.
If you put the signal in the null of the pattern, i.e. no sound received, you will have, this way, the direction of the source signal.

You could also compare max signal with minimum signal and have the same result.

hope this helps.
Ciao

Re: sound detection

If the sound is a tone, you can use two identical microphones. The phase difference between output signals represents the direction.

Re: sound detection

The military used a system in the past with 3 microphones in a triangular pattern to detect direction and range where a mortar was fired from. By using the speed of sound at a certain temp and the sequence of the frontal sound wave crossing the microphones, the distance and range could be calculated by a uP.

For military purpose, sonar signal processing use this tecnniques which can detect the submarine and its location and speed.
