thyristos

I am wanting to use a thyristor to switch a heating element but my concern is that if the thyristor fails, could it remain switched on? This would be detrimenal - any ideas on how to avoid this? Not too happy with results seen on a thermal trip switch - unreliable.

If the thyristor enters in short circuit, you can use a fuse, or a thermal switch to open the load when the temperature gets hot.

Most Common Thyristor Failure Mode

When a thyristor is electrically or physically abused and fails either
by degradation or a catastrophic means, it will short (full-wave or
half-wave) as its normal failure mode. Rarely does it fail open
circuit. The circuit designer should add line breaks, fuses, overtemperature
interrupters or whatever is necessary to protect the
end user and property if a shorted or partially shorted thyristor
offers a safety hazard.
