Please view this youtube video first.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YU3v_w7x7o&feature=related

According to the video, "flux" is placed on the pins. Then, he touches the pins with a solder iron, and the pins attached to the board. Can we solder SMD IC with only flux without lead? What is the different between flux and paste?

Thanks.

Basically the term Flux and Soldering paste refers to the same item. There are quite a number of fluxes available now a days, and the video never mentions which flux he is using. It may be flux with a mixture of ROHS lead free compound which looks like a flux when he applies and the Lead free compund is the medium which bonds the parts legs to the PCB and not the flux.
Cheers

The said video is hiding or even confusing some important details. The text says, it uses "Edsyn FL22", which is a pure no-clean flux.
The colour of the applied paste looks more like solder paste, a no-clean flux paste won't be grey. I wonder, if it's a self elaborated
mixture?

With flux only, additional solder would be needed for a reliable solder joint. The solder amount present with a HAL (hot-air levelled
tin) PCB surface isn't sufficient. Only BGA devices can be soldered without additional solder.

P.S.: The Edsyn FL22 data sheet mentions usuage of an Edsyn "Mini-Flow" tip, a concave tip with a solder reservoir, similar to Ersa
"SolderWell". But in the video, a standard tip is used.
