Attenuators Used in Frequency Generators?

Why Are Attenuators Used in Frequency Generators?
I recently did some experiments on amplifier circuits the device that used to produce AC signals (Oscillators) had a separate Knob for Attenuation, why are they required and what is the use of it? I Found a Knob present for increasing and decreasing the Voltage( / Amplitude ), why is it not enough For adjusting the amplitude of the signal?
