ADC1 always reads 0xFF

I am using silab's C8051F020 chip. I setup the adc but the value in the adc1 register is always 0xFF. Vref is 2.4V and the voltage from the temp sensor is .74 V. My understanding is the register should read 0xFF if the sensor output voltage is around 2.4V. Why is the value in the register always 0xFF?

ADC1 always reads 0xFF

I assume the the ADC istn' configured as required. There are various configuration options and a channel selection that must be correct for a meaningful measurement.
