series parallel circuits -need info: highly complex circuits

series parallel circuits

can anybody suggest a generalized view to understand if a resistor is in parallel or series to other component?
i know current divides in parallel and remain same in series but it becomes difficult to understand the concept for highly complex circuits.
examples are welcome.
