tantulum cap

Dear All,

I need some advice.

I'm not sure how to use the suitable SMD cap like (eg. Tantalum Cap and Ceramic Cap) for the circuit. Normally i'm using pin type component. Now, i would like to try SMD component.

In my circuit i have using MAX232 IC. The basic circuit for this IC is we need 4 capacitor. Normally i'm using pin type electrolytic polarity capacitor. Can we use Ceramic cap or Tantalum cap for this 4 cap? What's the is cap value suitable for this circuit?

Please advice,.

Thank you,.

max232 rs232 tantal capacitor

If you are usning the MAX232 the voltage doubler caps should be 1uF. If you are using the MAX232A they should be .1uF.

tantalum capacitor polarity

Tantalum or Ceramic capacitors are better choice in most of the cases perticularly under the situation at hand.

max232 capacitor values critical

Dear Kral,
It is simple MAX232 circuit.

Dear GSM Man,
Thanks for your information. I will make note (MAX232 Cap 1uF, MAX232A Cap 0.1uF)

Dear ark5230,
I have found one ceramic cap GRM188R61C105KA12D (1uF,16V,10%) on the net. May i know this part number is it suitable for the circuit?

Please allow me to ask few question here.
- Normally i using electrolytic capacitor with polarity (+/-) for MAX232. If using Tantalum Cap and Ceramic Cap is it suitable? because i worry if using non-polarity ceramic cap the MAX232 will not function.
- I reallize MAX233/MAX233A driver need not any external cap for the circuit. We just need to add one 0.1uF or 1uF at Vcc to Gnd and Pin-11/Pin-16 connect to Pin-15/Pin-10 only, am i rite? Other than that, is there any other important note for MAX233 or MAX233A?

Please advice,.

Thank you.

max232 ceramic

From the maxim datasheet:
The capacitor type used for C1–C4 is not critical for
proper operation. The MAX202E, MAX206–MAX208E,
MAX211E, and MAX213E require 0.1μF capacitors,
and the MAX232E and MAX241E require 1μF
capacitors, although in all cases capacitors up to 10μF
can be used without harm. Ceramic, aluminumelectrolytic,
or tantalum capacitors are suggested for
the 1μF capacitors, and ceramic dielectrics are
suggested for the 0.1μF capacitors. When using the
minimum recommended capacitor values, make sure
the capacitance value does not degrade excessively
as the operating temperature varies. If in doubt, use
capacitors with a larger (e.g., 2x) nominal value. The
capacitors’ effective series resistance (ESR), which
usually rises at low temperatures, influences the
amount of ripple on V+ and V-.
Use larger capacitors (up to 10μF) to reduce the output
impedance at V+ and V-. This can be useful when
“stealing” power from V+ or from V-. The MAX203E and
MAX205E have internal charge-pump capacitors.

cap tantalum vs ceramic

Dear GSM Man,

Thanks for your usefull information. :D

May i know, do you use MAX233 or MAX233A before?

Thank you,.
