cell origin

hi there,
what is cell origin? why do we need to move origin of it whenever we have finished a new layout cell ?

Re: cell origin

Hi,

Cell origin is the reference point in layout with which position of devices are measured/displayed. If you place the origin of the cell at the left-bottom of the layout, it means entire drawing is in 1st quadrant of layout window. In this case x,y position of any device/routing will be positive and is easy to interpret the location. It is not mandatory to keep the origin at the left-bottom for cells of the chip. But if you are using the cell in 'auto place and route' tool, it would be good to have origin of all the cells at left-bottom.

Also, while mentioning size of the cell, if origin is at the left-bottom you can just specify x,y of rigt-top corener of the cell.

cell origin

Moreover since the information of any cell is kept from the origin, it would be helpful to overlap cells easily wrt origin.
Say if u need to have multiple cells for different metal routings, place those routings wrt origin in their individual cells. Later we can merge those cells or instantiate them as it is wrt origin in a new cell .

thank u for your reply, but what do you mean by "overlap cells"

To place one cell over the other. Eg : Met2 routings in cell1. Via2 Met3 Routings in cell2. Cell1 and cell2 can be overlapped.
