making a carving machine

can we make a carving machine using microcontroller and stepper motors ?
by exporting 3d co ordinates in controller from autocad or any other software?
 

I did build this CNC mill, it uses a laptop to control it. I use it to make circuit boards and I have made small plastic parts with it, but the dremel isn't powerfull enough to cut aluminum, not quickly anyway. Any interest? feel free to ask.
