Why PIC micros have so many silicon erratas?

I tried to look around a better PIC at low cost, I found this PIC24HJ256GP206 and 210 but it was laden with 40+ silicon errors even at third chip revision. Even my current PIC I used PIC18F67J11 revison 2, I cannot use the PLL at maximum clocking because of known issues (resulting only at 8 MIPS operation).

Do ATMEL AVRs have lesser silicon errors than PICs? One drawback with these AVRs is high cost..
