I m completely new to this area. we are doing a project as our final year project of university.my part of the project is designing the digital part. but selecting a PLD for that is very difficult to me.. i don't no very much about FPGA, PLD.... so on. my requirements are below

low cost chip and a programmer , easy programmable , about 60 flipflops(not a chip with 1000 of pins)

can any one recommend a chip with details? experts, pls help me....

other way round;
first choose a tool - ise, quartus, other ?
then write your logic and compile with an option:
"target device - auto";
the compiler itself will select the smallest [and cheapest]
device that fits to your project;
then simulate it, make changes, resimulate ... until you get what you need;
then think of a real pld/fpga device;

have fun :)

Hi!

1) Find a guru near your location who familar with CPLD/FPGA
because you will have a lot of questions.
2) Ask your diploma instructor

or download for free WebPACK ISE from www.xilinx.com
or Quartus II Web Edition from www.altera.com

I think Xilinx Coolrunner II or Altera MAX3000A chips good for starting
-- Good luck

thank u so much.. because i m still a newbie to this area i m not familiar with ise, qu(at)rtus . i know little bit verilog and c progranning. can i write the logic in c or verilog with those tools? further help is really appreciate

anyway thanks u soo much j_andr

Yes, with Verilog or VHDL (both) or ABEL (for Xilinx only) or AHDL(for Altera only). But for novice I recommend schematic capture design. (IMHO)
Both tools have this possibility.

thanks Black Jack i m working on that

if it's a university project I suspect there are 'school preferences'
about synthesis program and fpga then follow them - it'll be easier
to find advice/experts/hardware and to share experience;
if you have free choice altera software is slightly more user-friendly;

do not follow the recommendation [sorry Black Jack :)]
to start with schematic entry, being familiar with the tool itself
you need no more then a week of exercises to write pretty useful
codes in verilog;
or you just need to complete this one school project and then forget
fpga staff forever - then schematics can be a good choice;

I advise from assumption that
1) Project isn`t complex
2) Time is critical
3) Madusnk ist`n Verilog experience user

So... Good Luck for all :)
