Difference between linear element and non-linear element??

Transistor is a linear or non-linear??

Transistor

transistor is a non-linear device.... it can be considered linear based on the signal and that too over a small region of operation...

Transistor

a device is said to be linear, if the input and output current follow a linear relation. i.e., any change in input produces a corresponding change in output given by the linear equation, y = mx.

non-linear device doesn't follow this relation, and the output might not change at all with an increase or decrease in the input current.

In a transistor, when this happens, we call it the saturation region.

Re: Transistor

What about capacitor and inductor are they linear elements !

Linear element is an electrical element having linear relationship between current and voltage.
Resistor is perfect example.

Transistor , Diode are Non -Linear elements.
Because they don't always follow the linear relationship between current and voltage.

Capacitor and Inductor are Linear elements.

FYI :
Linear elements :
In an electric circuit, a linear element is an electrical element with a linear relationship between current and voltage. Resistors are the most common example of a linear element; other examples include capacitors, inductors, and transformers.

Nonlinear Elements :
A nonlinear element is one which does not have a linear input/output relation. In a diode, for example, the current is a non-linear function of the voltage. Most semiconductor devices have non-linear characteristics.

Active Elements :
The elements which generates or produces electrical energy are called active elements. Some of the examples are batteries, generators, transistors, operational amplifiers, vacuum tubes etc.

Passive Elements :
All elements which consume rather than produce energy are called passive elements, like resistors, inductors and capacitors.

Basically if they obey Ohm's low, they are linear.

the components which gives linear response like for increse in input; output will be more such components are linear ex-resistror, capacitor etc..and exactly reverse in case of non linear components
