Help!! TRYING to make flash drive...

I have to make a flash drive. I am using an Atmel ATmega microcontroller, an FTDI interface, and an external memory. I have to include the microcontroller for other functions of the device. I need to create a schematic and I am completely lost. I don't even know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

This portion of the project does not need to be unique so if anyone knows of some place where I can find some references, that would help too. Please keep in mind that I am not very technically advanced. I know some basic stuff but please try to stick with "layman's" terms.

would you know anything about controlling an rfid transponder/receiver with a microcontroller?
