does the vector network analyzer shows polar plots, impedance etc...

it depends on the manufacuter , sure it show smith chart and impedance , and S parameters in complex formats

khouly

Yes, is more or less whole point to use this very expensive instruments. Most of then can show measured data in polar, smithchart and retangular form in re, im or mag, dB, and angle notation. Search 'hp 8753' on Internet and you find lot of information.

It also very important this instrument can export S-parameters for using RF-simulator in PC on usable way... check this before buy instruments...

If you hand tune (mecanical) filters, be sure screen uppdate going fast, >10 frames/s with least 201 point resolution, or you puke on job after while if you force to tuning filters whole days...

don't buy scalar 'network' analyzers, this is more o less unusable and waste of money...

This is very basic functionality and every network analyzer have these small utilities embedded in them.

I have used some very old network analyzers and they also have all these functions.

Yes,Recently developed Vector Network Analyzers have all those functions.

But Scalar Network Analyzers doesnt have all those features like Smithchart, polar plots,& u cant find out the phase also.If u need to get N/W check all those features in their catlog.

Scalar NWAs by definition cannot display Smith chart.

Scalar netwrok analyzer can only measure amplitude properties. But VNA measure phase as well

you have used one? can you sell it to me?:D

Scalar network analyzers are useful for things like filter testing, tuning up amplifiers, etc. The drawback is that you usually need an separate microwave sweeper as the signal source.

Most VNAs have the microwave signal source already built-in.

Some tests on a scalar network analyzer do not work well, like tests where harmonics or subharmonics can fool the analyzer.
