This is in regards to a dc-dc converter on chip. Firstly can someone please describe the difference with regards to the above two terms. Secondly, i am thinking of designing them using comparators and resistors, is this the correct approach. Can you please help me on this. Thanks in advance.

Re: Short circuit protection and over current protection cir

Hi Shai,

If in an regulator if the load ouput point has accidently been shorted to ground then a large amout of current will flow through the circuit and this can damage the pass transistor. Hence a short circuit protection can be used to detect this. Over current in a regulator can arise if the output load falls to a very low value. Hence an over current detection and limiting circuits are used. Both circuits detect large currents flowing through them.An over current can be because of various reasons including the short circuit. Hence an over current protection circuit can be used for short circuit protection also.

Re: Short circuit protection and over current protection cir

short circuit protection is the protection introduced at the output of the circuit to prevent damage to the circuit due to shorting of output..... over voltage protection is the prevention of damage of the circuit due to overvoltage at the input.....
