Linux is an operating system based on UNIX.You can refer to some forums like UBUNTU to have an idea...

Re: hi new to linux

Hi Satish,

Linux is created by a student to get his own copy of unix like operating system.
In those days Unix is very costly. Linus Trovalds is the guy who developed linux kernal initially. Later on lot of people contributed for it and helped it to grow as a mature operating system. Linux is totally free and it is distributed under GPL. You can also contribute for the linux OS, of it has to get approved by the maintainers.
Its entire source code is available in internet.

Regards
Gopi
