    How are you powering the electromagnet?
    you will need to provide a path for the current when you turn it off.
    if you do not, you can get very large voltage spikes that can damage the equipment.

    um is micrometer, 10^-6 m

    converting requires moving decimal point 3 places corresponding to multiplying or dividing by 1000,
    depending one which way you're going.

    i think it will work
    but the LED is always on, and there are simpler circuits to just turn on the the LED
    at 3.5 mA the LED will not be very bright.
