How to use just the low side of the ir2110

Two things.

I want to use just the low side of the ir2110 but when I've attempted this it just doesn't work. Could you shed some light on this.

Also, when I use this circuit for lighting I have no problems. I use a 555 chip to provide the signal. But, when I connect it to an electric motor I blow up the mosfets. How does that work?

Help would be appreciated.
