referring to the testing circuits that you mentioned above :

what does it mean by TRAFO ?

sw1 close positive trigger >> half power

sw2 close negative trigger >> half power

sw1 & sw2 full power

Does it mean by " sw1 close positive trigger >> half power & sw2 close negative trigger >> half power " that when switch 1 or switch 2 is closed the lamp would glow half and when both switches 1 and 2 closed (pressed) the lamp would glow full at its maximum capacity & wattage ???

Check Diac trigger voltage , means from datasheet or to measure and to measure with what, what should be its trigger voltage ?

thanks

what does it mean by TRAFO ?

It's a short version of 'Transformer', I'm not sure where it originated but I wish the proper name was used.

sw1 close positive trigger >> half power

sw2 close negative trigger >> half power

sw1 & sw2 full power

One switch makes the Triac fire on one half cycle, the other switch on the other half cycle so each effectively gives half output, when both are closed the triac fires on both half cycles and gives (almost) full power to the lamp.

The Diac information will be on the data sheet, basically it behaves like head-to-head Zener diodes, it doesn't conduct in either direction until a certain voltage is reached.

Brian.
