i want to design an antenna specifically microstrip patch antenna for 2.45Ghz frequency.....kindly suggest me substrate which should be economical and efficient(loss should be around -30dB) and which software i should use for simulation other than HFSS:???:?

economical substrate is always Fr4 - however FR4 may not be usable for you depending on the efficiency/gain required for you. although if its a single patch i would tend to think this should be fine. you note -30 dB for loss, but not sure if you're referring to return loss or ..

ie3d is perfect for this type of thing, however for simple patch its just as easy to build and test if you dont have access to em software.

zeland will typically will provide some demo time for ie3d, see user jian here on eda

I agree with ghb... In addition, if its simply linear polarization with adequate impedance bandwidth to account for some error, you can even design it with closed form equations.

Hello,

I agree with Kohi_boy, there are close form equations in this case.

I found a document online on Inset-Fed Microstrip Patch Antenna at 2.35 GHz, You can use Ansoft Designer to simulate this.
I think the attached document gives a starting point for the designing the patch antenna.
