How do I tell which terminals are for Left, Right, Mic on the 4 post female audio jack? I know which is ground.

When I use the stereo cell phone headset for which I am making this 3.5 to 2.5 adapter for in my PC I get proper Left and Right Speaker sound, this tell me that with regards to the male that the two tip contacts are for left and right because when I hold the jack to a regular headphone jack, so the third must be mic as the ground is the last. This don't help me to see how the female terminals match.

There are raised numbers on the body of the jack next to each pin (1-3). Pin 3 is usually used for input such as a microphone.

WOW! must need to update my reading glasses prescription, However, only 1 and 2 are marked, how do I tell 3 from 4? Am I to assume that that rectangle in the diagram in the first post is indicating ground and thus terminal 4 is the grounded terminal leaving terminal 3 as the unmarked terminal?

Re: Terminal Designation

Am I to assume that that rectangle in the diagram in the first post is indicating ground and thus terminal 4 is the grounded terminal leaving terminal 3 as the unmarked terminal?

That's correct. Of course these connections can be determined experimentally with a continuity test using a matching plug to access the contacts in the jack.

Ground Terminal Designator

Yea? That was my first thought but I don't have a spare four post 3.5 male audio jack, However, if that rectangle on the 4th terminal in the diagram represent ground then I am good. I had that suspicion but past dumb acts dictates that I ask the dumb question so you choose, a dumb question or dumb act?
