voltage to 7 segment

Hey guys ..
i wanna develop a system that displays current line voltage(220 Vac) on 3 seven segment displays. I have done rest of the work including coding. The problem i m facing is related to hardware. Is there any way i can develop same system without transformer. Currently i m using transformer to convert 220Vac to 12Vac.

Prompt reply will be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

voltage for 7 segment display

Without the transformer the circuit will share the common with the AC line. In most cases this is not allowed, for safety reasons.

If safety is taken care of through adequate insulation and you are sure the operator will never face any hazard, then you can simply use a resistive divider to step down the AC line to a value measurable by your A/D, say 0-5V.

I Have Done this & worked fine for me .. to monitor the Battery bank voltage

Use a bridge rectifier to make it dc ( upto 370V dc take care) .Connect the rectifier GND to Microcontroller Ground . A small filter capacitor of suitable voltage range( 450V will do) .. a bleeder resistor in parallel to the capacitor ( if u want speedy discharge of capacitor charge) ,, Make a divider network with 1Meg and 12K ,, put a zener of 5V1 in parallel to 12k.. .. Apply the voltage across 12K to adc i/p..
Take care Not to touch any part while ac mains is present
Best of luck
