Hi,
One of the most significant advantages of the Source degeneration in differential amplifiers is to make the circuit more linear.
Gray's book have also useful information on this topic.

Source degeneration boosts the output impedance, but decreases the usable output swing.

It boost output ac resistance, degenerate mosfet gm and make the gain more linear.
 

mos soruce degeneration

the resistor makes a feedback

helps input matching maching
helps to achieve better linearity
worse headroom if u use a resistor
if you use an inductor do not affect headroom and helps linearity too
provide series feedback

the utility o source degeneration depends on the circuit that you are using and what aspect u want to improve

Transforms input impedance to be real instead of imaginary
