I was going to install RedHat enterprise version 4, since it's much compatible with EDA Tools,

I will creat three partions, namely: root, swap, /usr/local

Which type to use? ext2, ext3, LVM ?? And what's the difference between them? Which is better?

Thank you in advance,
Ahmad,

Re: what is difference between "ext2" or "ext

ext3 is the new version of the ext filesystem. Basically, it has the same properties as ext2, plus journaling. Journaling means that after an unclean shutdown of your machine (i.e. without properly unmounting your filesystems) there will be no need to run an extended filesystem check (fsck), which is time consuming, to check the integrity of your filesystem.
LVM (Logical Volume Management) is needed only if you need to span a logical partition across multiple disks.

So, you should choose ext3, it's stable, very well tested an it's the default filesystem for RH installations.
