Pendrive

Hi there!

When using pendrive in Windows when the system indicates that the pendrive can be removed safely its led turns-off.

When using pendrive in Linux ( Kurumin - Brazilian Debian distribution) whe I unmount the device its led doesn't turn-off ? Do you know why ? Is it normal ? Is any risk to damage the device ?

Regards
Claudio

Re: Pendrive

Should not damage the filesystem. When you unmount the filesystem, all buffers are flushed.

About the file system I have no doubt that there is no problem. My doubt is about damage the pendrive itself, It seems that the windows xp cuts off the power in USB port where the pendrive is , in contrast the linux doen't appears to do the same. So, why the LED turns-off in windows XP and doesn't do the same in Linux ? Is there a chance to damage the pendrive when disconnecting it with the LED on ?

Re: Pendrive

It is unlikely that you will damage the pen drive if you unplug it from a ON usb port. The only reason that you unplug or disconnect the drive in windows is the same as unmounting the filesystem. Thus it is safe to remove the device while the LED is still on providing that the filesystem has been unmounted
