GNOME and KDE

well , logout then session then choose GNOME or KDE but i didnt notice any diffrence between them, maybe it work with u.

GNOME and KDE

Sure install both, login choose GNOME or KDE.

Re: GNOME and KDE

if you have a kde you can logout and login to kde if you dont first install kde.
that's all...

Re: GNOME and KDE

thats rare, because suse has KDE for defect in the installation, but if you don't have it, try to install kde3.5 that is the last version. but make sure that you have a good RAM, like 512MB or more, because is better but a little bit slower than gnome.

Re: GNOME and KDE

KDE is more user friendly than GNOME. KDE is written in Std C++. KDE uses more memory than GNOME. For me KDE 3.5.4 runs fine on a 256MB machine.

Most of the time I uses the console, and when I use a graphical interface I use only KDE. Because its so flexible. KDE is didn't seemed to be slower to me.

In KDE there are lot of "GUI themes". Usually distributions like RedHat and Suse uses a non-default theme so both KDE and GNOME seems similler. I use Debian 3.1r2 Sarge with default KDE themes, there you can really feel the difference. Anyway its all just individual preferences.

Re: GNOME and KDE

You can work with anyone of them, but I think Gnome is more reliable and stable, but there are more applications for kde

GNOME and KDE

these two differ vastly.
Gnome was written from scratch where KDE was built straight from the old X-system. Gnome and KDE both use a lot of caching but KDE as far as I know is is faster.
You can look into any of the other GUI's like WMaker or blackbox for a faster UI and less memory usage than Gnome and KDE.

Re: GNOME and KDE

For speed, use fluxbox. The new version is also KDE compatible, so you can run KDE applets, etc. :)

GNOME and KDE

It is said that a project called Portland is being developed for bridging KDE and GNOME. When it is done, it makes no difference for apps on KDE or GNOME.

So far, I think KDE is closer to Windows in term of user friendliness.

Re: GNOME and KDE

Portland doesn't really bridge KDE and Gnome. What it does is make it easier for ISVs to integrate their applications with both desktops. "Specifically, these tools make installing and uninstalling menus, icons, and icon-resources easier for developers. They also can obtain the system's settings on how to handle different file types, and program access to email, the root account, preferred applications, and the screensaver." So the ISV can now do the above without worrying whether the user is using KDE or Gnome (or any other window manager / desktop environment that is Portland-compliant).

Portland 1.0 was released a few days ago.
