passive active antenna difference between

what is the difference between passive antenna and active antenna ?
In my opinion, active must have its own power,passive don't need.
Is it right ?
any reference about these ?

Check out the work done at UCLA by Dr. Itoh's group. This group has worked alot on active antennas.
