fss simulation

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to desing and simulate an FSS structure in HFSS. Since FSS structures are assumed to be infinite arrays, I'll simulate a unit cell with periodic boundary conditions for simplycity. But I'm not sure how to setup the desing. I'm told that I should use PML but I don't know how to apply it. Can anybody help about this? And/Or do anyone have any other suggestions for desinging and simulating an FSS model in HFSS?

Thanks...

Put the PML on the top face of your air box. Also make sure your Master/Slave boundaries include the PML. A good way to do this is to

1.) first draw your unit-cell, then put an airbox around it (height should be 5-6 times the height of the unit-cell).

2.) then place PML on the top face of the airbox, make sure to make it visible.

3.) then draw another airbox which encloses the previous airbox+PML

4.) apply the master/slave boundaries

5.) setup analysis...best to generate mesh at a single phase delay and reuse the same mesh again...however this is only possible with HFSS v.8...HFSS v.9 does not have this feature, HFSS v.10 has this feature, but I have not yet got it to work...will update once I am successful.

Dear savedadogs, your instruction about FSS was very helpful to me. However, I'm still suffering to get reasonable answers in my configuration. Here's my case.

I'm using HFSS 10.0. Before simulating real FSS, I'm testing just PEC to get 0dB reflection throughout all frequencies(20THz~40THz). My FSS is only PEC (6.9um x 6.9um). Basically, I followed your instruction but the reflection coefficients are not deadly flat at 0dB. There are some ripple around 0dB, not negligible. I'm suspicious that I may not totally understand your instruction #5. Would you please help me? If you can send me any example about FSS using HFSS, it would be really appreciated. Thank you so much.

There is no detels about the setup analysis. Can anybody explan it.

Is it plane wave or waveport excitation!

Again...

Dear all,

For those who are familiar, analysis of FSSs works pretty much the same way as EBGs (or even PBGs). I've placed some HFSS tutorials on EBGs for some reader before. I'm re-directing you guys to the thread instead:

Hope this helps,

hfss master slave

what about excitation... what kind of excitation to be used and how... as wave port do not appear to be working with the waveguide with periodic boundaries.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

I am new CST and HFSS worker!

My main project is to design ustrip antennas with or without PBG.
You suggest which software?

Thank you.

hi masud,i am using cst 5.1 in metamaterials, some applications of ebg and pbg plus patch antenna and horizontal dipole.i COULD BE IN TOUCH WITH U

Hi everybody,

Regarding what you are talking about....

I'm a new HFSS user, and I want to design a thin film layered filter, which consists of a vacuum layer, followed by a two layers repeated periodically many times, and a substrate. Each of these layers have a thickness depending on λo (wavelength), thickness = λo\(4n).

I designed the structure using HFSS, and when I added a solution setup, a message appeared saying: "Given the specified frequency and model dimensions, an extremley large mesh will be required to produce an accurate solution ...".

Does that mean that the results will be incorrect or inaccurate??

and can the excitation be on a vacuum layer having a certain thickness? or the structure must start immediately by the periodic layers?

Note: I'm working on optical frequencies (λo=1000 nm or more).

thanks in advance...
