DCDC module is copper cased? What is the main reason for this?

Hi,
The DTJ1524S05 DCDC module has a copper case.
Do you know to what node this copper case is connected? Datasheet doesn’t say.
Presumably the copper case is to prevent radiated emissions. However, the bottom isn’t copper covered, so surely the RF will just leak out of there?
Also, is the mains reason for the copper case so that emissions cant couple to wiring which may be placed above the module?

It says "power module copper case" but the
main body evidently is plastic.

I imagine that the copper is to help bring
heat out of more than just the topside, to
the heat sink, through the potting material.

If you just cared about EMI then copper
plated might do just as well, "skin effect".

Consulting the basic datasheet of JTD15 PCB mount module answers part of your questions. It specifies case to input and output isolation -> case is obviously unconnected.

Yes the large bottom base is plastic. The top and sides of the actual module are copper (but painted black)
If the wires to/from this module go near the copper case, then i presume that they pick up less emissions from the SMPS, due to the fat that the case is copper?
Its a worry that wires going near the top of the module may pick up emissions and then re-radiate the emissions. But does the fact that its copper covered mean that these worries are unfounded?
 

I won't expect significant radiated emissions from the DC/DC module, mainly conducted emissions, differential and common mode noise at the in- and output terminals. Besides improving heat dissipation, the metal case will also quantitatively block magnetic fields at the 300 kHz switching frequency and its harmonics.
