Compilers and programmers for Motorola MCUs

What about learning motorolla MCus?

Is tools available as free versions?

what about the possibility of doing projects on mototrolla as a hobby?
What about compilers and programmers?

Motorolla MCUS ?

Motorola MCU's are powerful, problem with their latest MCU's are the packaging, mostly in packaging that cannot be soldered by hobbiest nor be directly used with breadboards.

Just same with Maxim MAXQ.

I don't see grat advantage of using Motorola MCU over other new releases of microcontrollers from for example Maxim. (**broken link removed** )
It doesn't look Motorola supports "free sample" program and I don't think you will find as many application notes, codes and support as for 8051-core family ..

I like Freescale MCU´s, some are powerfull and Low Cost. The mains problem are:
- "expensive" programmers - P&E Micro.
- very expensive software development tools (C compilers) - MetroWerks Code Warrior.

Actually I am start the ZigBee project and I will using one these microcontrollers:
- MC9S08GB32
- MC9S08GB60
- MC9S08GT32
- MC9S08GT60

I have use 908 series of Mot uC before and these are my opinion-

adv:
- 908 series is a huge family and depending on your requirement you can choose from an 8 pin uC with 2K memory to 48 pin with 32K memory.
- has in built functionality like usb, rf, CAN, etc.
- cheap, in volume
- good support from the motorola website. question are answered in less than 2 days.
- amount of application note is good enough, although not as much as other uC

disadv:
- i can't buy it in small amount, usually we can only get it through authorise dealer that requires a minimum order quantity of 200 pieces. buy it from farnel or RS, and they will charge you 5 times the real cost of the uC.
- no free compilers, the code warrior has an evaluation version with limited code of 2K.
- if you are using assembly, then everything is free.
- the same type of uC has different pin locations for different package, so don't take for granted. for example take the 8 pin QY1. the dip and the SOIC package has totally different pin locations. Read the datasheet, and you will know why this issue is so easily overlooked.
- lastly, and strictly in my own opinion, i felt that the QY1 has a low EMI immunity.

The code size limit of the CodeWarrior Special Edition for HC08 is 16kB now.

Probably for hobby avr is an easier road.
