Wire guage and current relation

If wire guage is more then current carrying capacity of wire is less. I am not getting this. How this relation is inverse.

SWG is inversely proportional to the thickness of the wire. Lesser the thickness less the current carrying capacity. Please see the relation between swg and diameter of the wire for better understanding.
