can I connect a 35v cap to grid voltage?

Hello, i work on a filter for my amplifiers, and a schematic i found says that i must connect 35v capacitors before mains, at 230v ac grid voltage.

is this possible? the capacitor will survive or it will explode?

Re: can I connect a 35v cap to grid voltage?

Yes, you may use a 16V capacitor. The maximum voltage for those electrolytic capacitors is limited by the parallel diodes to ~1V.

thank you, but generally speaking without any diodes, just a single 16v capacitor connected to grid voltage will survive?

No you can't. They only survive in this particular situation because the voltage across them is about 1V. So, nothing happens to a 35V capacitor. Without the diodes, the voltage is the full mains voltage and so the capacitor will explode.
