First you need to reason your requirement. You need to go through the exisitng protocols like SPI,I2C,1-wire, ..Uart based prototcol such as Modbus. Find out the drawbacks and then go for it. Its more of a study initially.
Check your schematic. Ensure the Enable pin of the respective bridge is high. Ensure the pin 8 is connected to 12V and ensure your using the right logic to run the motor.
