m making my project on pulse oximeter & d vry first question that m thinking is about the leds used & wavelength of radiations used?why is it so that we use red & infrared radiations?can't we use other visible radiations instead of red?

i m a b.tech. final year student & m making a pulse oximeter for my final project.i have a doubt that is it necessary to have the wavelengths of led as 66o(red) & 940(IR)?will the device not work with a slight changes in wavelength?
plz do provide me the required...
