Think of a dropped ball that loses a bit of energy after each collision with the ground...how far does it travel...up and down...before it stops? That's described by a series...
The tests you mention are used to determine if a series converges...sometimes you just need to know IF it converges...
A few applications from page 13 on

I also think you should read a calculus book...many of them have examples or problems that illustrate applications in physics and engineering.

Yes....re: the determinant...and that gives you trivially the i cross j = - j cross i
And...how do you do bold here...html?

Cross product - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
dot product...
If this is a physics (engineering?) problem any attempt at linearizing needs to be driven by the physics (engineering) of the system....so until you explain that I don't think anyone can help.

We typically work in a right handed system....defined by i cross j equals k....{i,j,k} being the basis vectors (or a set of basis vectors)...to convince yours elf that this is consistent draw a diagram...a point on the x axis say at x=r...rotate that point about the z axis in the xy plane with...

In general....when you say you want to build a Linux server that does not tell me much...EXACTLY what functions do you need AND what sort of load to you expect?
