Wrapping a sheet around a spherical surface works as expected for me. I would need your exact error message to help out more.

This means that you have assigned two different boundaries which overlap. It actually is not an error, just a warning, and your file will still simulate.
The X next to "3D Model" means that you have an error with your geometry. It does not mean that the geometry is not 3 dimensional.
Can you post your exact error message(s) to help further diagnose your problem?

Here is a picture of a planar spiral inductor that I built in HFSS. Perhaps you could use a similar method to excite your coil.
