if I remember well, middlebrook is a small signal analysis. while the first method you use is large signal. make sure you have a low level signal in HB simulation in order to avoid compression of your "amplifier" .
To monitor your CP current , connect your CP output to a ideal voltage source; set the value at the average VTUNE of the VCO and monitor the current in this source. you can then use a STEADY STATE ( PSS in spectre) anaysis, which will allow also to run noise analysis.

The ways to decrease noise , use faster mos for better switching speed, reduce current source noise ( trade off). take balanced structure to avoid switching low noise sources, which are inherently slow.
