if you are going to use java you ahve to go through the api, there is a class called connector and all the subclases that implement network connections are childs of this one. It's all in the API!!!
first you have to read the basics about the languaje, then this kind of forums help a lot when you have some doubts. thinking in c++ could be a good place to start.
read the variety of ebooks about the matter, i don't think verilog it's a good alternative. But that's just me. You can find a large number of books in www.ebooksclub.org.
