I've been driving the 5110 lcd screen ('8544 chip-on-glass controller) with a 16f874 using the hardware mssp module. The setup for the mssp is:
clear sspcon
clear sspstat
sspstat,6 = 1 (cke)
sspcon,0 = 1 (xtal speed / 16 , 1.25 mhz with a 20 mhz xtal)
sspstat,5 = 1...
I've found that even the messyist flux can be tidied up with a tiny paintbrush dipped in acetone. (just watch out for connector shells and other disolveable parts)

My experiences with press'n'peel film have been good - I cut the film to just larger than the PCB design and stick it onto my proofsheet with "laser labels" , so they don't jam in the printer. This way I get 30 pcb's from a pack of 5 sheets.
