Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

OK, so I'll add a thin sheet of paper between the core halves before assembling them. That means there will be some stored energy. I figure I could recover that stored energy through the AUX winding, by using an opposite polarity AUX winding, like a flyback secondary. Now that I look at some...

Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

Actually , the 12V is the aux supply, which powers the pwm. I use external supply to eliminate the complexities of startup during raw testing. Input to the SMPS is 120V line , or 165V link capacitor voltage.

Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

The auxiliary winding is not used- it is open . power is currently supplied from an external isolated 12V supply. This matter of remnant magnetization disturbs me though. 150mT is more than a third of total flux headroom. I thought the whole idea of soft ferrites is that they have negligible...

Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

This is the schematic. some part numbers are not right ( like the TIP3055 switch ) Eagle did not have templates for my MOSFET and some other parts, so I chose whatever component would give me the desired PCB patterns. For example All inductor pins are implemented as PADs, which I can...

Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

Thank you kindly mtwieg. It then means there is no saturation possible here, so spikes are the next suspect. The volt seconds per turn are nowhere near saturation. ( 165V, 0.000006 s, 25 turns) ( ETD44, N87 ferrite ). I used triple-insulated wire and mingled the primary and secondary together...

Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

So once you've properly designed for safe magnetizing current, and use a PWM that's internally limited in duty cycle, you never have to worry about transients destroying the circuit by saturation. Although they could still destroy it otherwise. A hard transient, such as that created by flicking...

Trying to understand saturation in a single switch Forward converter

I am coming from 60Hz line transformer design, and somewhat new to SMPS. I am trying to understand something about core saturation. In laminated line trafo, the closest you ever come to saturation is during idle operation - no load on secondary, just magnetizing current. Any current drawn...

    Why MICROCHIP stopped giving samples?

As of Oct 01 2009 they are sampling again. For a US account, with a corporate electronic firm email address, the website indicates: 3 sample orders max per 30 day period, 2 part numbers per order, 3 units max per part. Although a "Fee" is mentioned before you order, the last screen in the...

High side MOSFET drivers cannot work for Full-Bridge?

Actually my breadboard testing has so far been under ideal conditions - drive pulses from signal generator, resistive dummy load, open loop on the PWM, etc, so if there were problems inherent in these HVIC's, I didn't give them an opportunity to surface. So I Do want to be prepared for any...

High side MOSFET drivers cannot work for Full-Bridge?

fan7371 schematic Thanks for reply OK I read both specs again sevaral times, to the best of my ability, since I'm not an engineer. I'm beginning to see that the FAN7371 is OK in a full bridge, but would have a difficult time with something like a 2-switch forward. And the FAN7085 might be...

High side MOSFET drivers cannot work for Full-Bridge?

high side mosfet driver I am working on a Full Bridge offline SMPS using high voltages. I had bought the Fairchild FAN7371 high side MOSFET drivers to drive the high side FETS. https://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/FA%2FFAN7371.pdf I thought I had this thing worked out and was blissfuly...

Companies which offer online free sample ordering

avr microcontrollers free samples Oct 24 2008 Microchip stopped sampling globally If you look at the company's financials, you'll understand: stock price at the lowest level in over 5 years, and has recently dropped about a third of its value. Income was flat 2007 to 2008, after showing steady...

Multisim has trouble simulating simple triac lamp dimmer

triac lamp dimmer I've just installed Elecronics Workbench Multisim 9, and was tinkering with a classic triac/diac lamp dimmer circuit. Waveforms are extremely spikey, inconsistent, and at times just plain wrong. Some signal excursions are even higher than the AC input voltage. If I...
