Now Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 sp1 is really free from microsoft. You may try it, it is an easy emulator though.

U can find a huge software in freshmeat, but for distro specific:
For rpm based distribution (redhat, fedora, suse) use rpm [package name] it will download from the vendor server or mirror
For Deb based distribution (debian, knoppix, ubuntu) use apt-get [package name]
If you wanna lite linux distro try this:
Feather linux (~60mb)
Puppy linux (this one is very nice even small ~60mb)
Slax (~200mb)
Damn Small Linux (you already know about this)
But if you wanna install linux in old computer i dont think it would be wise (except u use console only). NetBSD is...

I dont think that the latest Linux distro could not detect ntfs well. By the way, the latest linux distro supports either write and read from ntfs partition. ref: linux-ntfs.sf.net
Even today u can recover, resize and repartition ur hd even it is in ntfs.
I think it depends on ur need :). I had tried various kind of *NIX OS. But the best one is Knoppix (u can install it in harddisk). The reason is :
1. nice GUI
2. U can play mp3 or other audio/video file without installing more package
(in RedHat/fedora core/suse/mandriva etc u must install...
I hope that ur filesystem is not NTFS. Usually old distro that use old ntfs module could detect the size in wrong number. Try to install newest kernel module.
You may try qtparted,cfdsik,fdisk or sfdisk

If the case you wanna take back ur window$ boot. Try this:
Put ur windows installation CD
Press R for recovery console
fill password (if ur windows have admin's password)
in the console type help (if you wanna know all the command)
if you wanna take back mbr from linux/...
