Excellent collection of ZigBee & XBee documents and examples.
Thanks for posting
I have used XBee (XBee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) for my arduino projects.
Below are few examples,
XBee adapter - Simple wireless communication
Xbee Adapter - wireless Arduino programming
Here is a link of micromouse constructed using arduino,

And here is a tutorial which might help you code it on your prototype, or create a simulator for further use,
How to Build a Robot Tutorial - Society of Robots (has the simulator source code as well).
What is the baudrate that you are trying to set ?
And I don't understand the register settings.
When you say BRGCON1=0X01, does it set only the SJW ? What is the value of the BRP ? (bits which control the baud rate prescaler)
WLAN in general refers to any LAN (Local Area Network) that a user can create/connect to via a wireless/radio connection. IEEE 802.11 is the foremost standard for wireless LANs.
As I stated before WiFi is a trademark coined by Wi-Fi Alliance to brand devices compliant to IEEE 802.11...
This entirely depends on your application/requirement.
DSPs tend to be much more faster than the signal processors built on FPGA. Also implementing a Signal processor as good as TMS320C64x (which is on the beagle board) on an FPGA will require a sufficiently large FPGA. A prototype board with...
I would suggest BeagleBoard.
It has an excellent DSP (TMS320C64x) (C6000 High Performance DSP - TMS320C64x DSP - TMS320C6410 - TI.com)

WiFi (might stand for Wireless Fidelity) is a general wireless standard/term governed/coined by Wi-Fi Alliance.
The Alliance uses this term to describe many wireless specific technologies like WLAN( IEEE 802.11), PAN and may be WiFi direct and similar technologies.
