i recall we did the same search before and we ended up using ckernel , its a very tiny kernel written in C and ported to 8051. have a loot at it www.ckernel.nl

i recommend the AVR butter fly kit. it has an avr controller, uart for programming low power modes and and LCD and it it 25$ in price. its great. there is also free books on how to use it.

i didn't look at your code, but in general there is always a compiler directive that tell the compiler that these stuff is constant in ROM for example for avr u can use the word
